Seven accused members of German far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
